Julio Sagreras (1879-1942)
Born to Gaspar Sagreras and Dolores Ramírez, both guitarists, Julio first studied with his father and was already giving recitals at the age of 6. He was the first guitarist of his epoch in Argentina to have systematic training in harmony and composition. In 1905 he founded the Academia Sagreras, the first institution devoted entirely to teaching the guitar in Buenos Aires. As a teacher he was pivotal, and as a composer he was prolific, with over 160 works. Worldwide, guitar pupils have benefited from his Lecciones de Guitarra, a masterly, charming and effective training in classical guitar technique, much influenced by Aguado and Tárrega. Published here are his 6 Estilos Criollos and the charming Lección no. 2 from vol. 6 of his Lecciones. One who did much to popularise the works of Sagreras in the USA was the Cuban guitarist Juan Mercadal, a pupil of Severino López, who studied with Miguel Llobet.
